“Ask why”: Emma's review of our 200-hour yoga teacher training in Da Lat

By Giang Hoang · Yoga teacher, E-RYT 500 · · Vietnamese version

Emma's review is one minute and 47 seconds long. The last two words are “The end.”

Somewhere in the middle there is one small word I keep listening for: why.

Emma trained with me in person, at the studio in Da Lat. I kept her words as they are. I only stuck a few notes in the margin.

This is one student's experience of the in-person course. It is not a promise of how anyone will feel.

Hi, my name is Emma. I am doing my 200-hour yoga teacher training at Giang Metta Academy. I really cannot more highly recommend this studio to do your yoga teacher training. It's been a wonderful experience. Giang is really knowledgeable and has a beautiful teaching style that encourages a lot of curiosity.

She's always encouraging me to ask why, not just for myself, but also for my students.

I appreciate a lot how the course focuses on alignment and teaching pedagogy. I feel like I'm a better teacher, not just a better yogi.

And I feel like I'm leaving the course stronger both mentally and physically, and confident to teach students that come from a wide range of levels, focusing on their unique structure, understanding their anatomy, and with some really cool tools in my belt regarding breathwork, making sure that students know the importance of each technique and why they're using it.

I just can't speak more highly about the wisdom that I've gained in this course. And I really recommend it if you're thinking about doing your yoga teacher training. The end.

What does “ask why” look like in class?

In one minute, Emma names four things. Here is the question behind each one, the way I ask it in class. Each card opens an article where I explain it properly.

  1. Emma: “focuses on alignment”

Does this line help the joint, or does it just look like the photo?

    Read: what alignment is →
  2. Emma: “teaching pedagogy”

Why this cue first, and only one at a time?

Read: how to cue a pose →
  3. Emma: “a wide range of levels… their unique structure”

Why does the same pose look different on her body?

Read: how to observe a pose →
  4. Emma: “why they're using it”

Why this breath, at this moment?

    Read: breathing for beginners →

Her words are quoted from the video. The questions are mine.

Your turn to ask

A review tells you how one person felt. If you still have a question, start here.

Last word

Emma ended her video with “The end.”

For a new teacher, it's more like the start. The first class. The first student who asks you why, and you have to find the answer.

Keep asking why.
