Singing bowl series · Beside someone lying down

Two singing bowls at once: are both vibrating?

Three short clips from a singing bowl practice. Two bowls rest on someone lying down, and two hands play them at once. Not many words, but enough for three things to check.

Watch this first

Two bowls turning together

The learner sits on the left, one mallet in each hand. Two bowls rest on the person lying under the blue blanket.

Both bowls are turning. You can see that. Then someone asks:

“Can you feel both of them vibrating?”

There is a very quiet answer, lost in the sound of the bowls. Too quiet to write down, so the clip leaves it out.

Turning and vibrating are two different things. Turning, your eyes can see. Vibrating, someone has to feel.

Two mallets circle two bowls resting on someone under a blue blanket.

A small moment in the middle

When the room laughs

The room laughs; both hands stay on the bowls.

Laughter in the room. Someone gives a compliment:

“Your skill just went up a level.”

Then a reminder, left unfinished:

“You laugh and the bowl…”

I keep the sentence unfinished and don’t guess the last word. The idea is easy to see: laugh, and the body moves. A bowl resting on a body moves with it.

In the clip, both hands stay on the bowls.

A line you hear a lot

Go slowly

Still two bowls, now played slower so they don’t clack.

Anyone who has learned singing bowls knows this reminder:

“But go slowly, or it starts clacking.”

Still two bowls, still turning. Just slower.

Another class has the very same reminder, in Singing bowl sounding harsh? Slow down.

For those learning to teach

Three questions to check with two bowls

Check each question for each bowl. Tap when done.

  1. Are both vibrating?Don’t only watch the hands. Ask, or listen yourself: are both sounds up together? In another class, a learner was still getting her two hands to work together: see Learning to lead a Sound Bath.

    No bowl checked yet.

  2. Is the bowl on the body moving? When the person lying down laughs, the bowl moves too. Watch the bowl, and watch the person.

    No bowl checked yet.

  3. Are the hands going slowly?Hear clacking? Slow down.

    No bowl checked yet.

0/6 checked

Three small questions. But with two bowls at once, everything doubles.

Play, then ask one question.

About the footage

The three clips are three continuous parts cut from one video, filmed on a phone in a fixed position. No scenes were joined. The frame is cropped close to the learner and enlarged, so it is a little soft. People speak Vietnamese: Vietnamese subtitles on top, English below. Subtitles only use lines heard clearly over several listens; unclear words and private talk stay blank.
